ABOUT THE IMAGES
Both of these World War II photographs were taken in 1945 during battles against the Japanese for control of the small (454 square mile) island of Okinawa. Limited resources show that the image on theright, taken by a Marine combat photographer, is that of a Marine firing at a Japanese sniper. Details about the image on the left are better known. It shows Private First Class Paul E. Ison, First Marine Division, on May 10, 1945. PFC Ison, then age twenty-eight, was reported to have run through Death Valley three times under fire when a Marine combat photographer captured this moment. Mr. Ison passed away on October 3, 2001 in Fort Myers, Florida. He was eighty-four. Semper Fidelis.
